Goodbye Summer

Your rays lifted my moods

when grey clouds reined.

Strong beams sustained me

through languid days.

Tides roll out

Autumn colors waiting to meet

others long for your warmth

while I welcome sweet relief.

It’s been a long and humid summer in Australia and, as much as I love the sunshine and spending lazy days at the beach and in nature with the people I love, there comes a time when you feel you’ve had your quota of heat. Your body and mind needs balance and a rest.

It’s ironic how our moods change within seasons.  How we can long for something so badly, like sunshine when it’s cloudy or a shower of rain when the grass is brittle under our feet.  Then we get it and time passes and we have so much of it, we yearn for what we once had.  It’s a perpetual cycle.

It reminds me of the Passenger song ” … you only need the light when it’s burning low, only miss the sun when it starts to snow, only know you love her when you let her go. Only know the high when you’re feeling low, only hate the road when you’re missing home, only know you love her when you let her go, and you let her go ...”

It’s time to let go and say goodbye to the swelter of summer, at least for a while.

I’m looking forward to the cooler days of Autumn, for crisp mornings and vibrant colors to appear on trees as mother nature showcase her many faces.  For growth and new life and a season of fresh beginnings.  As the sun goes down tonight on the last day of Summer in this leap year, in my small patch of the world, I welcome it in gratefully.

Every season has its beauty and its hopes.  May we all find happiness in the moment, in whatever season we’re in and may we appreciate each day as it unfolds.

I wish you a warm heart always and much joy as we continue the journey.

  1. You’re right, Miriam 🙂 We need balance in our life. You know, here is a saying: “I love the steak very much, but sometimes I want to eat bean”. :))
Here comes the spring, in your place comes fall. I think this is a balance, too
Have a nice Monday, Miriam, and an amazing week!

  2. Lovely thoughts Miriam. I saw on the news last week that we are to expect a long, hot and dry Autumn in Queensland, so there will be no respite from the heat just yet. I do love summer, so I’m not sad that it will continue for a while longer.

  3. You’re ending summer??? We’re still in winter for another month. 🙂 There’s a million things I love about this post. Mostly it’s your writing about wanting what isn’t in the moment, then missing what is gone.

  4. Yes! Yes! Yes! I, too, am ready for Autumn. Although in Queensland we don’t have true seasons, my mind chooses to have seasons and Autumn is MY season. I can think in Autumn and the colours fill me and fire my soul.
Such beauty in you photos, Miriam! Especially love the sunrise/sunset ones – but that may be due to the Autumnal hues.

  5. The top and bottom shots are just amazing. What a crazy world. Your summer is over, our spring is around the corner and i just spoke to a friend in the Dominican Republic who complained that it is starting to get too hot. Cheers!

  6. It’s pretty cool to read about what’s going on on the other side of the planet! I feel the exact same way about winter here in New York, which is waning now. Your photos of Australia never disappoint. Happy Autumn 🙂

  7. Fabulous images! 🙂 I can feel the warmth of that sun. 🙂 Ours is just lifting lazily into the sky, over my shoulder, as I sit here typing. Our English sun is a rare guest at this time of year and of course I’m desperately looking forward to hot days. They may never happen 😦 Yes- careful what you wish for!

  8. I know what you mean about having too much sun. Even us pommes have had enough of the sun come autumn. But winter can be so harsh. If we could just have spring, summer and autumn, that would be perfect. 🙂

    1. I’m glad too. Happy to have connected and look forward to sharing much more. Have a lovely evening while I get on with my very hot day here (it’s midday in Australia).
