Our Patch at Perlubie

After leaving Ceduna we continued along the South Australian coastline, with a rough plan to check out Perlubie Beach before heading to Streaky Bay.

I’d seen drone photos of popular Perlubie with lots of vans and campers parked along its long sandy beach. We’d heard a-lot of stories about tides and cars getting bogged but mostly how great it was. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about.

Till we got there and got bogged ourselves!

What you see isn’t always how it is

When we arrived at Perlubie it was fairly busy but on doing a quick reconnaissance we discovered that further down the beach there was room for both our vans together. The sand was a bit softer and deeper but all was good. We’d found our spot. And now, finally I could see what the fuss was all about.

When the Reality Exceeds the Expectations

Every camper on Perlubie Beach has their own patch of paradise in front of them. Ever changing views of the water, the tides and big skies, big, expansive, and mesmerising water views. And those sunsets.

Orange and reds, yellow and abstract colours in the sky, reflecting in the calm waters. Every night the sky was different and every day I was in awe. We planned to stay for four nights.

I went paddle boarding for the first time. Sue and I kayaked to the deserted island we could see from our campsite. We waded into crystal clear water with the odd manta ray swimming by and we basked in early morning sunrise walks on the dunes, high above the beach.

One day Doug and I kayaked further out and were thrilled when a pod of dolphins leapt out near us. I was ecstatic but of course my phone was back on shore! The days passed as though we were in some alternate reality and I’ve never felt more in tune with nature.

The Big Move

Yep, we’re bogged!

On the fourth morning one of the beach shelters became available. We decided to move but it turned into a big lesson in sand driving. Fortunately there are always people with four wheel drives close by to help and haul you out of a bog. We rescued a few bogged cars ourselves during our stay here. It’s all part of the Perlubie adventure!

Thankfully it didn’t happen in the middle of the night, at high tide. That’s what happened the week before our visit with scores of vans getting swamped and bogged in the early hours of the morning when the tide came up super high. Lesson: always check the tide warnings.

Our New Home

So we moved back up the beach and it was like upgrading to a penthouse! With our hammocks set up and Steve’s twinkling lights strung around, our wall-less beach shelter could have been a five star resort at an Hawaiian hideaway or a Balinese bungalow. With our vans parked on either side we had everything we needed. Our simple beach shack at Perlubie had become our new home.

We enjoyed the company of other travellers who strolled past and stopped to chat. Strangers and neighbours became friends. We sat around campfires and stargazed, shared food, drinks, stories and laughs. We danced to music under a coloured sky and a backdrop of watching waters. Those tides lapped high a couple of nights but never more stressful than just lulling us off to sleep.

Just the facts

Perlubie costs $10 a night which is paid via an honesty box at the entrance to the beach. There’s no booking system. Campers need to be completely self sufficient. There are flushing toilets at the entrance but they’re a long way if you’re up the other end of the beach.

The sand on entering is fairly hard but gets softer the further along the beach you go. The closest dump point is at Streaky Bay which is about 17kms away. Streaky Bay also has a pub, bakery, supermarkets, caravan parks, fuel and fresh water to top up your tanks.

Day trips from Perlubie

If you can drag yourself off the beach at Perlubie there are great drives close by. Head into Streaky Bay and follow the signs to the Cape Bauer Loop Trail. You can walk out to the whistling rocks and the rock holes. We had lunch at Tractor Beach and explored the rugged coastline on the scenic Westall Way loop with many views and places to stop along the rocks and explore.

We had a picnic on the rocks at Smooth Pools and said hello to a few Australian Sea Lions from high above on the boardwalk at Point Labatt. Our final stop for the day was the ancient Murphys Haystacks before treating ourselves to fish and chips for dinner at Streaky Bay.

Perlubie Beach will always have a special place in my heart for it’s laid back vibe, all the wonderful people we met and those amazing sunsets.

I’ve never camped in a place where everyone was so happy. It was like the Earth, sea, water and sky was in perfect harmony and we were all part of it. Maybe you can understand why we ended up staying, not four nights but over two weeks.

Time flies so make each moment count

Every day, wherever we are, it seems that time is flying by, regardless of what we’re doing, whether we’re happy or not and whether we’re living our dreams or simply going through the motions. But it’s okay to slow down, to simple enjoy, to love each moment, each connection and every opportunity to choose love.

We spend our entire lives rushing, constantly striving, often leaving it too late to do the things we really want to do or we think that it can wait until later. But the truth is, life is to be lived NOW.

We’re so blessed to live on a planet that has gifts of the divine on it. Those gifts are everywhere, and we don’t need to look too far to find them, for we’re all creators in this big beautiful Universe. We’re creating our reality in every choice we make. But mostly they’re in us, our authenticity and the way we show up in the world.

So, make the rest of your life an adventure. Seek out joy and all the wonders of life, wherever you are. Look up and love life and it will love you back.

  4. Wonderful photos. There’s always a lot of adventure in getting stuck. Add high tide to the adventure and you have gone off the charts.

  11. I think I would have been tempted to stay for two months! (Except perhaps for the toilet situation….LOL!) Thanks for sharing the photos, and telling us all about your latest adventure. I can’t imagine waking up in the morning to that view, or having such a great beach shelter. You are living the good life for sure!

    1. Yeah, I’ll be honest Ann, I could have got used to that view. But there comes a time when you have to move on. Can’t disagree about your last sentence though. I’m feeling very blessed and grateful.

    This has to be where NEW EARTH starts lol…. and it couldn’t have accommodated more nicer people… Even you getting bogged down didn’t spoil a thing.. because it showed just how when people work together, problems get solved..

    An amazing place… Absolutely AMAZING photos Miriam… that sky… breathless…. words fail…. Oh to swing in those hammocks lol… and watch the sunrise and set.. Brilliant..
    So happy for you as you find your various pieces of New Earth in your travels Miriam.. This is what LIFE and Living should be ….

    1. Hello Sue, yes it truly was an amazing place and even now, a week after we’ve left, I remember fondly the beautiful vibe there. I definitely think it was a slice of New Earth! But I also think it can be found anywhere and in fact over the past nine months everywhere has felt special and been incredible. I’d love for us all to find and live in this state of freedom, gratitude and love. Reality is bringing us slowly closer to home and the harsher world of commitment and obligation, yet I hope to bring this mindset of freedom and abundance back with me. Big changes are afoot.       1. Exactly Miriam.. New Earth is where ever we intend to make it.. And it all starts within ourselves. and our Intentions..
        Keep that Dream alive dear Miriam… The more of us who think of living in a state of freedom, love and gratitude, then the sooner we attract those situations and conditions to us…
        Keep thinking on Good outcomes as you draw closer to home… Alot can happen in a short space of time.. and I feel April May we will both see what we have been waiting to see start to develop ..
        And then those changes will begin to make huge strides forward as we envision Unity and Harmony..

        2. They are.. we are living through a time never experience in the universe before..
          And we all volunteered for this transformational experience.. To which future generations will I hope look back on Earth’s trials and tribulations along with the suffering of human kind to thank those of us in the here and now who are pioneers, holding the light, to rid the planet once and for all of its darkness, corruption and evil..
          No small fête.
          And we still have more than a few hurdles yet..
          But I can see the beauty of that new earth Miriam, and I know you do too… 🙏💕🙏

        4. I was like that all yesterday Miriam slept alot during the day too I couldn’t keep eye open so went with the flow.. and rested and slept..

  14. Gorgeous pics and seems you guys had the time of your life at Perlubie. Truly amazing scenery and scintillating view laden with writing touching the soul. The time is Now, I agree, the good or bad in making the most of things. Perlubie seems to be the destination and got a friend in Australia. Will share the link with him.
