Guest Post: My Top 5 Local Eats in Melbourne – A Mindful Traveller

I’m delighted to welcome the lovely Lorelle from A Mindful Traveler to my blog, who I had the pleasure to meet and share a brunch with a few weeks ago in Melbourne.

With a shared love of travel and blogging (and eating!) there was no shortage of conversation. Lorelle has a wonderful blog where she shares her love of travel, life experience and food.

“I believe travelling is learning experience, where we embrace uniqueness, open our mind and treasure the life long memories we create.

My love for food, is also demonstrated through my blog. Here, I share with you my personal recipes, which have been inspired from each destination we have visited.”

For those visiting Melbourne anytime in the future this post will whet your appetite for the many wonderful places to sit, eat and enjoy our fabulous city.

Settle in with a cuppa and enjoy as she shares her favourite eateries in our hometown.

My name is Lorelle, wife, mother of two, beauty therapist and passionate traveller, who lives in Melbourne, Australia.

Although it has only been twelve months since I began A Mindful Traveler, I have found this journey rewarding and fulfilling. I have made many wonderful connections and I enjoy writing and sharing my unique stories about travelling and my passion for food.

We are extremely fortunate to live in such a diverse, multicultural city such as Melbourne. With a plethora of cafes and restaurants, choosing a place to dine can be a bit overwhelming. So, for me, there is nothing better than supporting local business, and when that involves food…… I’m all for it!

My local neighbourhood is where you will find an array of cuisines from all across the globe. Italian, French, Vietnamese and Si Lankan, are just a few. There’s something for everyone over in my neck of the woods, so welcome…

Here are my top 5 local eats in Melbourne.

O’heas Bakery

This family run business has been operating in Coburg for 62 years. Having achieved such a milestone, O’heas bakery has earned the trust and respected reputation as the local bakery, deli and café. O’heas has an extensive range of gourmet groceries (including imported quality wines), fresh deli produce, crusty breads and delectable cakes and biscuits. The coffee is a must and there is always service with a smile and a chat of course. Currently at O’heas, every Wednesday and Thursday night from 6pm, it’s burger night. Either dine in or take away, a great way to warm up this winter is with a burger from O’heas bakery and deli.

Le Jolie Café

Le Jolie Café is my little escape to France in the middle of Pascoe Vale. With the smell of warm buttery croissants and sweet waffles, I am drawn to this cosy café each and every time. Café owner, chef and artist, Guy. Trinquet, is quite the talented Frenchman. Guy’s artwork is displayed within the café and can also be purchased at Le Jolie.

Serving delicious dishes for breakfast and lunch, a definite must at Le Jolie Café, is the hand melted French style hot chocolate. It’s sheer heaven melting in your mouth.

Cirelli & Co

In the heart of Brunswick West, lies the cosy and intimate Italian restaurant Cirelli & Co. This hidden gem delivers traditional Italian dishes with seasonal fresh produce. Cirelli & Co have and an exquisite range of Australian and Italian wines, and local beer on tap, which can be enjoyed out back in the beer garden.

With a regular changing menu, Cirelli & Co keeps the locals coming back for more.

KG4435

This local Vietnamese restaurant opened in April 2017. This newbie restaurant/café, has given the locals much to talk about. With an intriguing name as KG4435, one wonders where the name has originated. Explained on a wall in the restaurant and on the menus, KG4435 was the name of the first boat to arrive in Australia, from Vietnam 42 years ago.

Fresh ingredients and a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere, draws customers back for more.  With extremely delicious food, and authentic Vietnamese flavours, this welcoming café is a definite local treasure.

Lankan Tucker

Sri Lankan cuisine is quite hard to come by in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, so when Lankan Tucker opened up 3 years ago, I made sure to check it out. Serving traditional dishes with a modern twist, this welcoming café/ restaurant, packs a punch. What I enjoy most is the versatile menu. Catering for vegan, vegetarian, and allergies, the menu offers not only Sri Lankan cuisine, but modern Australian dishes as well. So, you can enjoy your curry with a St Ali Roasters or Code Black coffee or enjoy your eggs and avocado, with a Sri Lankan specialty drink. There’s something on the menu for everyone at Lankan Tucker.

  1. Oh yes, Melbourne is definitely the ‘foodie’ capital of Australia and those goodies in the bakery store look delicious. Thanks for the info. I live in Brisbane but we do love visiting Melbourne when we can. Have a great week!

  2. Great post, I was thinking it was ideal for WN as I read it!
Wonder if Miriam mentioned that I also write for WN, was trying to recruit her, or anyone so I’ve missed my spotters bonus 😦

  3. Lankan Tucker would be my favorite. Although I’m a vegetarian, I love it when a restaurant caters to all palates. The plate here looks a little full, which takes a smidge away from the overall presentation, but I’m still curious to taste it because it does look good. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Oh Miriam, I love this! How cool that you and Lorelle got a chance to meet and get to know each other in person. I visit her blog also, and she’s contributed to #ForgivingFridays. 🙂 All of these restaurants look amazing. When I was dating Vic (the Australian guy I almost married), we stayed for a few days in Melbourne twice, I wish I could remember where we ate!

Sending you such love. You are a blessing to me. Light and hugs from across the pond — Debbie
