Story-lines in the High Country

I love that idea, that a line can go anywhere. That it can start from nothing and become something significant, that it can be both a journey and a destination.

That line can go from Point A to Point B with purpose or it can simply meander until it finds what it resonates with.

Lines everywhere

Look around and you’ll see that lines are everywhere, sketched on pages, painted on roads and strewn in the sky. In fact, like anything, focus on a theme and watch how it grows.

Yesterday driving home from the high country I saw them everywhere, road lines, fence lines, power lines and even lines of grape vines.

Visually they’re in so many things around us, both man-made and in nature.

Lines create boundaries and fences yet Mother Nature is the ultimate artist with her easel, painting pictures with every stroke.

Just like these straight lines that towered above our campsite on the weekend.

I’ve just returned from camping in the high country, celebrating my daughter’s 20th birthday.

On Saturday we walked through the iconic Craig’s Hut on Mt Stirling. This is a place where legends are born, where The Man from Snowy River was penned and filmed.

To quote a few lines from Banjo Patterson’s famous poem:

There was movement at the station for the word had got around

That the colt from Old Regret had got away, it was worth a thousand pounds.

The poem is a classic, at least in Australia. I blogged about it in one of my very first posts which you can read here.

When the past comes to life in words … inside the hut

Outside the hut, on the walls, are more lines of wood.

However, perhaps the best lines are those relating to our own story.

How will yours read? Are you just beginning, are you half way through or are you, like most of us, still figuring out the lines as you go along?

Have you written a certain story and then decided it needs to be rewritten?

Are you the hero of your own story or are you the victim?

Remember, we can always rewrite our lines if we’re not happy with how it’s heading.

Make your story a beautiful one. Look beyond the ordinary and see how much potential and opportunity exists in the world.

Find your place in it and don’t be scared to step up, jump those boundaries and take a chance.

It’s when we step out of our comfort zone that we grow and that our story deepens.

As April comes to an end, let’s look forward to creating a new story-line for May, new chapters full of excitement, hope and possibility.

Keep shining, keep writing and keep enjoying that journey.

  5. Beautiful and inspiring post as always, Miriam 🙂 I love the life-line imagery… My line is still going right and left, trying to make the most out of life. It made wrong turns, but I wouldn’t erase them, as these scribblings are a part of the whole picture now…

  6. Love your posts Miriam. They always make me reflect. I am loving my life and enjoying the lines that I am given and those that I choose.
    The High Country is one of my favourite places.

  8. Oops sorry!! As I was reading, I kept thinking how sometimes the lines in our journeys are straight and wide, sometimes narrow and crooked. But that’s all part of the journey, right? Happy Birthday to your daughter! Thanks for another great post Miriam! 💖

    I generally fluff my lines a few times, but I think that’s all part of the story. And I definitely tend to meander these days…

  14. Miriam, your photos are so beautiful and make me long for sun and warmth.
    Your philosophising on lines, using nature and our lives lives is very deep and interesting.
    Well, there have been many squiggles in my life but also strong defined
    ones. We all walk the road we can and grow with our experiences.

    A thought, I will look out and see how many round and wavy lines I can see.😊 .

    1. ‘Strong and defined’, I love that Miriam, it shows you’re a woman who knows her worth. As for round and wavy, that’s interesting. I wonder if they’d be as prevalent. 🙂

      1. Reading your answer I just looked out in the garden and smiled big. There was a round table, curved armrests, a stone bench with oval seat, an arched top over another bench.
        The deck had striped lines. 😊

  19. Another excellent post Miriam. What a beautiful way in which to celebrate your daughters birthday.. And yes Lines every which way we turn.. And I think I am lingering longer on some lines and maybe rewriting others.
    One thing we each should know.. No matter which line we are stood on right now, like roads, they all lead us home one way or another..
    Depends just how much we want to invest in time spent travelling them..
    I like the scenic route.. 🙂 as I love to linger longer.. And absorb all I see..

  20. What a great post, Miriam! I love the idea that we can adjust our own lines as we need to, and set off in a new and better direction. I guess that kind of self-knowledge only comes after we’ve lived a while, but it is worth the wait. And happy, happy birthday to your daughter!

  25. I really liked how you started this post. I never thought of a line as a journey or a destination. I’ve always felt that lines restrict freedom or movement. That’s why I loved your interpretation. It’s a new way of looking at the same old thing. 🙂 There’s so much to learn from you. xo

  32. This is fantastic Miriam, I love the parallels you’ve included here. The high country is beautiful place with so much history to tell. You’re right, our story is special and we need to start looking at how it will read. Love how you’ve woven the lines theme into this post 😊

Oh I love this….hmmm my line would start off on the straight and narrow…very orderly and in its proper place…and then it would go off on tangents again and again and again….but always returning to the straight and narrow main line. As I’ve gotten older I would say my line has become less rigid, less straight and narrow…it has softened and now has curves and circles and curly cues…I like the new line I am drawing…and it has many vines growing from it that are each exciting to venture down. What a marvelous post my gorgeous lady…so thought-provoking!! Camping under those trees must have felt amazing…I love them! I think you have beautiful lines and I like where they’ve been, where they are and where they’re going!! Big curly line hugs!! xo ❤

      1. It’s funny because as I’ve added to my painting each night my plan for tomorrow is to paint lines but scrolling lines not straight ones, all throughout it! I love that our two lines have connected at this time too!! The perfect lines connecting at the perfect time!! Big scrolly lines xo ❤

        2. Lol…thanks!! It really is quite fun…I’m deriving such pleasure from it. I added a layer of violet to it, then a layer of magenta, tonight I sponged on yellow, and tomorrow it’s green for the scrolling vine lines!! ❤
