Shifting thoughts: I’ve Won Today

Do you ever have thoughts that just won’t get out of your head?  It might be from that job you’re barely tolerating as you drag yourself out of bed each morning or it could be a relationship that isn’t working out. Or maybe it’s just negative thoughts that keep creeping into your head.

And you feel like talking to yourself and saying to those pesky thoughts …

So you must go along your way, for you see I’ve won today, oh would you be so kind to please get off my mind …

Call me crazy but I talk to myself a lot.

Meditating daily has been a great way to shift those roller coaster thoughts but sometimes we need more.

Sometimes we need a good dose of music and some punchy positive words.

When life gets blurry

That’s where my guitar has become my best friend. I started playing when I was 14, then I put it away for many years. It’s only been in the last couple of years that I’ve embraced it again.

Proof that we’re never too old to reconnect with our passions.

Who would have thought years later I’d be collaborating online with amazing artists from around the world to create original songs? Here’s our latest.

Written by my talented poetic co-creator Deb and mixed by Rob from Friends without borders, here is I’ve Won Today.

It’s a song for anyone who’s ever been stuck in an unhappy relationship, stuck in a non fulfilling job or just plain stuck in a negative way of thinking.

It’s feisty, loud, boisterous and a bit of a defiant pick me up tune for those moments when life threatens to drag us down.

It was fun to sing. I hope you enjoy it.

Are you doing what you love or are you letting negative thoughts rule your mind?

If so, STOP and shift those thoughts and get yourself into a better frame.

Here are a few other ways that can help to shift the focus:

  1. Get physical. Anything that gets the heart pumping and the endorphins flowing. Walk, jog, cycle, dance, take those Zumba classes you’ve been thinking about. I can’t wait to start again next month.
  2. Get creative: Write that story, get those ideas written down for your book, learn a musical instrument, draw, paint or sketch that masterpiece that’s inside you.
  3. Get planning: organise your next holiday, even if it’s just a weekend or day trip away. The anticipation and planning is often just as exciting.
  4. Get busy: immerse yourself in doing something for others. Helping others takes the spotlight off ourselves and is often the best way to feel good.
  5. Get Happy: be silly, watch clouds, dance naked, eat ice cream, make love, make a snowman, play charades, talk non stop till 3am with a good friend, do whatever makes you smile.

Remind yourself of all you DO have in your life rather than the opposite and you’ll notice thoughts shift to a better place.

Hope you’re still feeling the restful energies of the month as we head into another New Moon period. I feel as though we’re in a time of change with signs all round us attuning us to our path.

In a few posts I’ll be sharing one of the most amazing signs that came to me recently, that lead to a new song. It’s called Planting Dreams and I’ll be sharing it soon.

In the meantime I wish you peaceful days ahead, filled with music, love, laughter, kindness, warmth, friendship and, most importantly, lots of smiles.

With the right shift in focus life is simply delicious.

In fact, I’d say, with the right shift in focus I’ve Won Today.

In light and love as we continue the journey.

  1. Great song, music and voice. Journaling works . Write out the pain rip up and throw away. Then write out affirmations and gratitude. Repeat all three steps until the pain goes. What will happen is one day you will get bored of the pain and all you want to do is affirmations and gratitude.

Ps i have done this and it work it really does. It is important to rip and throw the paper away

  2. Ok so first of all Bella’s comment posted at 9:28…hmmm!! Such a great uplifting inspirational post, as always. I love all the suggestions you offer…especially the dancing naked one!! Love the pic of you creating music!! Interesting that you had a table setting (it looked delish btw) and I had a table setting in today’s posts…actually I’ve come to expect it, in fact it actually surprises me more now when we are not in sync than when we are!! Beautiful, encouraging sentiments Miri…love the quote from your journal, I was just thinking a similar thought the other day, sync!! Anyway lovely you, I look forward to your Planting Dreams story too!! Goosebumps!!! Have a blissful day and the best is yet to come. Big winning hugs xo 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for your lovely words Deb, my partner in co-creating crime! Yes, we are most definitely in sync and I’ve come to expect it more often than not these days too. That table setting was actually lunch at Lily’s the other day, just before I recorded Planting Dreams and sent it to you. I agree, the best is most definitely yet to come. Big winning hugs back. xo 🙂

        1. it is magical but her guitar playing is up there too + your words + Rob’s mix … very dynamic! Feel privileged to be here for the ride and hope it becomes paid gigs for Miriam or a air play but at least you are all having fun creating.

        4. Aww, look who’s talking. You’re so lovely and of course I’ll pass on your best wishes to Dan. Yes, he’s loving his rip sticking (in fact I’ve just bought him a new helmet) not that he’s on it today. It’s currently 41C at the moment and a scorcher. xo

  4. I’m having fun playing along with you and Deb. It’s at times daunting to add instruments to another’s original. In music circles, adding too much to a piece is called ‘stepping on’ someone’s song. So, I’m doing my best to keep to the feel of the song. The beauty is that I can delete anything that I’ve added without ever damaging the original. Planting dreams will arrive in a few days😍

    1. I totally understand where you’re coming from Rob but trust me, you’ve never ‘stepped on’ the feel of our song. It’s great to have your input and I’m excited to hear what you can do to Planting Dreams. Just keep having fun, that’s what it’s all about. 🙂

    1. I went through this stage too Brad. It took a while to break down the barriers and resistance and expectations of what I thought others wanted. I realised it wasn’t about other people. It was what brought me joy and just being true to myself. Don’t give up and don’t be hard on yourself. Maybe it’s just a process that you’ll work through and one day, bam, it’ll hit you and you’ll know.

  5. Oh Miriam! You’ve done it again 😀 Your voice! Just wow – I love listening to your magical compilations with equally talented friends. Gosh this is making me want to pick up my guitar again! Are you self-taught Miriam or did you have lessons? xx

    Liked by 3 people

    1. Thanks Hayley. Well, I guess I’m mostly self taught though when I picked up the guitar again a few years back I took some classical lessons for while. Learnt how to read music properly and tinkered with a few different styles like Jazz, blues and country. But I seem to have come full circle it seems. I didn’t know you played too. How wonderful. xo 🙂

      1. That’s fabulous Miriam, I played for a very short while and learnt how to play an Oasis track, I have a classical guitar but am wondering if I need an acoustic for the songs i’d like to play? I shall investigate! xx

  6. You know, I think you are my favourite “positive” person that i know, certainly that I follow on blogland. You always slant your posts towards the light, even when the shadows are creeping. You have a talent for it Miriam, keep up the great posts.
haven’t listened to your music yet (speakers issues) but I will.

      1. They did, but I could hardly hear it a the maximum, and as I am also slightly hearing impaired that just made it worse. Wonder if there is anyway for you to boost your recordings from your end, but probably the software you are using is the issue, as I have tried to listen to some other music created with it and had the same issue, So, unfortunately I can’t give you the comments that I am sure you deserve it. Oh well, when it’s out on CD I can always buy it 🙂

        1. Hmm, yes, we’re looking at the recording equipment actually. It’s all pretty amateurish at the moment but one day … Always appreciate the feedback Claudette. Yes, here’s to our first CD. Thank you my friend. 🙂

  7. Wow you’re a woman of many talents Miriam! I had no idea you could play the guitar and sing! I play the piano and have always wanted to learn guitar. I had even signed up for lessons but canceled feeling it just wasn’t the right time. My son is now taking electric guitar so it is cool. Yes, I’ve had those annoying pestering thoughts, yes I talk to myself all the time and thank goodness for the “Daily Calm” app where I do my ten minutes of mediation every day! It has been a savior! Great post! 🙂

    1. Thanks Nicole. Daily calm is an awesome app. I did that for awhile too, now I just do lots of different meditations. It’s a great way to start (or end) the day. As for my guitar, I’ve grown to love it all over again. This is our sixth song on my blog and just finished the seventh one which I’ll post later this month so I’m pretty excited. How cool that your son is learning the electric guitar. Maybe you could join him on acoustic. 🙂

  10. So lovely to see you still playing guitar after all these years. If it makes you happy, it makes you happy. I like the point about being busy: being busy you get up and do things and you feel productive, feel better about yourself. Like you, there are days when you just hear those voices in your head. I do listen to them, reflect and then tell myself there is always another way to look at things 🙂

    1. So very true Mabel and I think the key really is to keep busy. A nice balance is good but ultimately it’s nice to feel we’re being productive. Hope you’re enjoying your weekend. 🙂

      1. Being productive helps us to look both inwards and outwards – that there is so much to do in this world, and we can actually do it. I am loving all these summer weekends. Hope you have a good week, Miriam 🙂

  11. Great song Miriam! It sounds like you are having a great time with collaborating! I love your list of ways to shift your focus. I found that I use quite a few of those and now have more ideas to add. ❤

  12. Good insight. I enjoyed the part about you using mediation to center yourself and change your focus. That really hits home with me. I have recently been battling health issues that rocked my word. I kept saying to myself, “when I’m healthy I’ll be happy”. Through deep mediation, I realized just how wrong I was. Now I know for a fact it’s “when I’m happy, I’m healthy.” That’s why I mediate, so I can switch my focus on the positive, and rid my thoughts of the negative energy and emotions that I encounter daily. Thank you for this post

  13. Oh so loved your Song Miriam and it most certainly lifted me my friend. Loved it and your collaboration with your friends in its making. Just wonderful.
And such sound advice.. Getting creative is what I have been intent on doing this year. My guitar skills I started from scratch last year, still need lots of practice, but I strum certain chords and enjoy the sound even if others in ear shot may wince a little LOL..
What matters is doing what we enjoy, which is why I have been absent a little from the WP blogs.
Good to be catching up today with you..
You brought me JOY and what better gift is that. 🙂 ❤ Thank you Miriam. Love and Hugs my friend

    1. How wonderful that you’re learning guitar as well Sue, a year of creativity, I love the sound of that. Enjoy all those new ventures, it’s exciting and expanding isn’t it? I’m currently camping by a river, hence the delayed response to your lovely comment but thank you so much Sue. Love and hugs back ❤️

      1. I bet there are idyllic views at your campsite..And never worry about delayed replies.. As you see, its been two days since I logged in to catch your response, lol..
Family and Creativity comes first.. 🙂 Much love and the guitar, my hands could have done with stretching much sooner than now.. And my finger tips were sore to start with but one day at a time.. 😀

        Liked by 2 people

        1. Oh definitely Sue. It takes a while to get used to the stretching with guitar playing but you’ll get there, one day at a time. And what a fun process of learning in the meantime. Family and creativity definitely comes first, thank you for that, it’s a lovely thought and very true. Our camping was beautiful, absolutely idyllic. Just heading home now. 🙂💕 xo
