Music in the Outback

We’re leaving this Sunday for our Central Australia outback trip and packing has begun in earnest.

There’s one thing that I’d like to take but I’ll probably leave behind and that’s my trusty guitar.


She came with me to the Flinders Ranges and I enjoyed playing a few tunes around the camp fire but I’ve decided this trip she can stay at home. She’ll be waiting for me.


What is it about music that makes me feel so good?

It relaxes me when I’m stressed, inspires me when I feel flat and gives me a kick arse boost of energy at Zumba when I need it.

I’m sure I’m not alone.

Who doesn’t love a good boogie?

Music has such power to alter our moods, to raise our spirits.

As a goodbye serenade I’m going to share a song, written originally as a poem by my lovely friend and inspiring blogger Deb at Once Upon a Hot Flash and sung and played by yours truly this morning.

I’m definitely no Taylor Swift, but I do enjoy my music and I adore the words to this simple yet stirring song.

There’s heart behind the words, which speak of living mindfully and embracing all our senses in creating the life we want.

“Open your mind and create today, open your mind and create. Imagine the life you want today, imagine the life you want.”

Even though I won’t be taking my guitar on this trip, I’ll be listening out for that magical music of the outback.

The birds of the wild, the whistle of the wind in the canyons, the rustle of the breeze blowing wistfuly in a symphony of nature is all the music I’ll need.

Oh, and a bit of Ed Sheeran and friends for those long hours in the car.

Then there’s the best music of all, the stillness of silence in the heart of the Australian outback. We often need it in a chaotic world.

Listen mindfully next time you’re outside. Who knows what magic Mother Nature will put on.

Wishing you all music to lighten the spirit and sooth the soul.

You’re right, we’ve kind of gone down different paths but you’re always there and I’m always here (even if I am in the outback at the moment!) and you’ll always be special to me.   13. Oh Miriam! You are so gifted – I’m just floating listening to your beautiful voice and your melody… I’ve always wanted to learn the guitar. I played for a while and then stopped and exchanged for the drums instead! But now i’m inspired to pick it up again! And I love that this was co-created by you and Deb! Amazing xx

    1. Thanks so much Hayley, I must admit I really enjoyed putting Deb’s beautiful poem to music. And how funny because I’ve always wanted to play the drums. Ever since I was little, but I learnt guitar instead. I guess it’s never too late to learn, for you or for me. Hugs xo

  20. Amazing post. It was a pleasure to read, I just wish the darn SoundCloud would work on my iPad. I always walk with my bass guitar anywhere I go with exception of my family vacation in South American. I was told someone would have borrowed it permanently… haha. Thanks for the inspiration.
