Last week there were kangaroos in the back paddock. Yesterday there was a bogged car. What the …

“You might want to bring your phone out the back ” said my hubby.

“If you want photos of a four wheel drive recovery. A car’s just gone into the creek.”

Sure enough, there it was. And as I walked out beyond our back yard, into a beautiful sunny Melbourne day, I saw the group of guys.

They grinned sheepishly as I approached.

“Nice day for a drive” I said amiably. “What happened?”

No answer.

It was pretty obvious. They’d been doing “donuts”, cutting laps, looking to spin their apparently brand new Navara in a secluded patch of countryside, which just happened to be out the back of our place.

Seems they miscalculated the creek.

Lucky for them we were home. Lucky too we’re not unfamiliar with such misadventures.

It was just weeks ago that hubby ingeniously got us out of a bind at Toolangi when we got hung up on a log and he chainsawed us through.

Still, our escapades are not usually this close to our own house.

So today he was at it again. No chain saw required, instead it was the recovery gear out, snatch strap hooked on and on the second go he hauled their car out of the creek. 


Recovery mission complete the grateful guys shook hands with hub while I waved then off, shaking my head in disbelief as they hooned off in a swirl of dust.

No lessons learned here, at least not for them it seemed.

Still, at least we got some rescue practice in before our upcoming road trip. Hopefully we won’t need it but no harm in being prepared.

Doesn’t hurt to help someone in need, even if the silly guys brought it on themselves. Oh well, that was our good deed done, right on our door step.

Speaking of good deeds I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me in the 2017 Annual Bloggers Bash Awards. The event was held last weekend in London.

I was thrilled to find out my blog took out equal runner up award in the Most Inspirational Blog Category.  Congrats to all of the winners listed here.

Thank you so much to all of you, my friends, who have been along with me on this ride.

It’s such an honor to be part of this amazing community and I feel truly blessed. I’ve said it before but I honestly feel as though we’re all winners, spreading our own bit of joy in every post we share.

There’s no doubt that we all support and inspire each other, where ever we are, at home, in the back paddock or across the ocean. I love that we’re all in this together.

What a journey we’re on.  Here’s to more adventures, and to loving life, on and off the tracks.

  3. Congratulations on the vote, Miriam! 😀 ❤️I just love the kangaroos in this photo…seems so odd to have this as ‘local’ wildlife where we have rabbits and hares! Oh, I fear you’re right and that lessons won’t be learnt but on the plus side, you could set up a side-business of vehicle recovery – you and your husband are getting lots of practice! 😀😀

  4. Miriam, I do so love this post, from the first word to the last. Every picture of rescuing silly guys overestimating their skills, your wonderful tale of it all.
    Be prepared must be your hub’s motto. Everything there, no sweat.:)

    The picture of Roos watching and laughing at all antics must be my favourite together with the flowers representing friends.
    How right you are, it is an amazing journey and already after a month I find myself smiling at a sharing from someone here or there. Distances are surpassed by the warmth and care.

  8. congrats on getting so far, well done Miriam 🙂
    we, about a dozen of us, early one Easter morning risked our lives making a human chain to rescue 3 drunk fisherman about to be swept out the heads into the ocean with an even bigger storm brewing. Paper interviewed them later that day even drunker down the club … no mention of the heroic rescue 😦 and they continued to drink …

  11. Life throws in unexpected adventures at times! I think travelling and rescuing goes hand in hand. Lucky those guys got quick help, that’s why they had no lessons learnt 😉

    1. Yeah, they did look a bit sheepish. I think there was a lot of false bravado there though I think if we weren’t around they would have been even more embarrassed. Who knows?

  23. Hehe I remember being on both ends of the snatch strap a few times. Rarely was it because we were doing circle work, wasn’t something we did, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t the result of something just as silly. Between home and the farm, cars and utes, trucks and tractors, I have enough getting bogged stories to have the men in white coats chasing me to put me in a padded room….just as well I tag everything on my blog as fiction 🙂

  25. Good post! It’s Darwinian, so maybe longer term those guys have learned something. If not, it’s back in the creek and not so lucky next time! When we were younger, we never, ever did anything foolish(!)

    1. Hi Di, thanks for your lovely comment. I think the main thing the hoons damaged was their pride, oh and a piece of the front bumper bar. We found it afterwards.

  40. Congratulations on making runner up! Your blog is consistently inspiring (and honest, and entertaining, and just plain great to read) so I’m not at all surprised that it did so well. You deserve it for sure!
    As for the young men, they were very lucky you and your husband knew how to help them out, and were nice enough to do it. When I think of some of the stuff we did at that age, I just cringe!

  44. I laughed right out loud when your wrote that the roos were probably laughing at those boys…they probably were! What good Samaritans you two are…and let’s hope it’s not necessary on your trip but as you said at least you’re prepared…be sure to bring along all rescue equipment. I’m so thrilled to pieces that you came in runner-up, well truth be told you should have won…next time!! Are you camping on your trip…how will you stay warm if it’s that cold? I don’t like being cold so I’m wondering hmmm bring along lots of woolies, long underwear, heavy socks, hats, mittens, scarves, blankets, electric blankets, hot water heater, heater…ha!! There’s so much to remember to take, I hope you’ve been keeping a list since you first planned this trip so you won’t forget anything. Yes here is to growing and blooming together!!     1. Haha, I’m still smiling from your last comment and now I’m laughing out loud! Yes, we’re camping BUT we’re in a camper van and we’ll have all of those things you listed, including s little heater and more! Oh yeah, we’ll be prepared alright! Lists and check lists and more is the order of the day. I prefer the heat to the cold so it’ll be invigorating to say the least, at night anyway, the days should be warm. 9 days till blast off!
