Learning to Fly

Remember when you crawled and walked
when you babbled
and began to talk.

Remember learning to ride and falling from your bike,
scraped knees and cries,
there was both fear and delight.

Remember escaping into books, so excited to read
wanting to grow
as you strived to succeed.

Remember falling in love and your first kiss
when your world was ignited
in the discovery of bliss.

Remember the excitement when you left school
the world was your oyster
you were ready to rule.

Do you remember your dreams
and the goals that you set
or have they been lost in a sea of regret?

I have no major regrets although I do wish my memory was better. Big important life events and milestones stand out but many memories feel like an old photo album or tapestry that fades over time.

We have a collage that hangs in our hallway.

Look closely and you’ll see it’s made up of many disjointed photos.
They’re all pieced together, like a jigsaw puzzle, to create one illusion.
Life is sometimes like that. We’re all made up all of so many different parts.

So much of who we are is affected by our experiences in life and the people we meet along the way. They all influence us.

We’re all changing, every day, in everything that we do. Learning, taking risks, making mistakes, falling down, picking ourselves up …

Changes affect us every day of our life, whether or not we realise it.

The beauty is all in the experience and the growing…

In the end it doesn’t matter when we started to walk or talk. We all got there in our own time.

It doesn’t matter how many times we fell off our bikes. Ultimately we all got back on, one way or another.

It doesn’t matter when we had our first kiss. What’s important is that we’ve loved and the relationship we have with ourselves.

It doesn’t matter what we did when we finished school. Whatever path we’ve chosen we all find our way in the end.

What matters is having faith and believing in ourselves.

What matters is today. The choices we make, the paths we take and the sliding doors we go through all play a part in where and who we are.

In April let’s stop, reflect and accept where we are in life.

Let’s take one day at a time, be kind to ourselves and see how far we can get by the end of the month. That’s what I’m doing.

img_3654

Here’s to having a vision, yet not looking too far forward that we miss the small joys of today.

Here’s to the baby steps and the little things we achieve every day.

Here’s to being the best version of ourselves that we can be.

Go on and give that inner child a hug.  Be kind and gentle to them, they’re still within you, even if you can’t remember them.

Look within and you’ll find your inner muse … remember those dreams and fly.

Happy April everyone.

Wishing you all a month of  reflection and self discovery as we focus on those small forward moving steps in our journey.

Remember it’s those small steps that lead to us finding our wings so that we can fly.

  1. I loved this, Miriam. It’s beautifully written and very soothing for a troubled mind. These were some words I needed to hear today, just to settle the inner turmoil a bit and let myself breathe. Thanks so much for sharing x

  2. For me, the only thing that matters is that i have to be happy in life…rest is all good to have.

I wish for a sharp memory too, but i guess not having one is a bliss…you don’t stay with negative thoughts for long!

..this is really beautiful…we all need to be reminded …at some point we look too eager for the future that we forget.and neglect the very essence of what’s today…
Thanks Mirriam…this is just exactly what i need right now..

  4. This was so wonderfully uplifting. Actually made me feel the delight I used to relish in when we would get to read things in school that made me feel just like your post did. April is my birthday month so I always seem to be deeply reflective and a bit nostalgic during this time. Thank you for the lovely inspiration and morning smile! -Tori

  5. Oh Miri you’ve done it again. You always make me take pause whenever I read your posts and inspire me to have a better attitude. That there really are so many more wonderful things than not so wonderful things and to keep on plugging along and I will realize my dreams. In the meantime, I’m surrounded by so much greatness that I should not pay any heed to those things that bring me down. You pump me back up with optimism and to wear my positive outlook, leaving behind the negative one. Sometimes it just gets hard when you spend day after day doing something you don’t want to do and remain positive. But then I pop over and read you and you take that all away!! After my inner muse, you’re my outer muse. Thank you my dearest muse!! You’ve started your Friday and I hope it’s even better than yesterday was…and then it’s the weekend!!! Great big muse hugs to you! xo

  7. Wow Miriam! I almost have no words. First, I thought “what a lovely poem”, then “amazing collage”, then “oh, I love daisies, such a beautiful photo”…. and then your words and reminders became so moving. Thank you for speaking that truth. It’s easy to get lost in things that went wrong, or plans that don’t happen fast enough”, but today is where we are and we should embrace and enjoy it.
Happy April. It seems as though I found some words after all. 😉

  8. I loved this Miriam! Good advice not only for our own lives, but for our roles as parents as well. I remember when my kids were still growing up and I felt so much pressure to make sure they were hitting all the milestones exactly when they should. And a good friend reminded me that when they grew up and applied for college, the application wasn’t going to ask how old they were when they were pottied trained. And when they were interviewing for their first job, no one was going to ask how old they were when they learned to ride a bike…. You get the picture! We all get where we need to be sooner or later, and that’s all that matters!
Have a lovely weekend, my friend!

    1. Thanks Ann, your good friend had some very wise advice. Sometimes when we’re in the midst of it we often don’t see the big picture ourselves. Yes, we all get where we’re supposed to be in our own good time. Hope you have a great weekend as well. xo

  9. A beautiful post Miriam! Yes – small steps – even a 1 degree shift makes a massive difference to our destination in the long run… ‘Believe’ – yes I believe you are moving in a whole new direction.. even if you aren’t sure where the road is leading in the longer term! xx

    1. You’re right Wendy, I have no idea where that road is leaving right now. Sometimes I wish I had a bit of a compass but I guess you’re right, it doesn’t matter, maybe it’s just that one degree shift and forward motion that matters. Thank you my lovely friend. xo

  10. Remembering dreams is so important. It’s easier to get lost in routine. I love your writing, Miriam. April is bright and sunny here and your words are perfect to capture the energy of spring. 🙂 I’m guessing, it must be cold in Australia? Loved the jigsaw photograph of you. What a wonderful idea. You never fail to inspire.

  11. Hello dear Miriam!
I was going through my emails and can’t believe I missed this post from you…
How beautiful is your poetry and thoughtful reflections? I just love them and we always must begin anything with accepting ourselves as best we can. Little reminders such as yours contribute to it becoming more accessible for us.
Putting pieces of the puzzle together and changing every day… such a lovely way to see it all, my friend.
    I love your photos too.
    Take care Miriam 💕Di
