Travel theme: Transport

They say that getting there’s half the fun, that the joy’s in the journey, not the destination. Can’t say I disagree. And whilst flying is definitely the fastest way of getting somewhere our tight finances are grounding us at the moment.

But that’s okay, there are loads of other interesting ways to get around. Even if it takes us longer to reach our destination.

Just means we’ll have more fun along the way.

I’ve never been one for cruises, although I must admit when I see a ship docked I think ridiculously of the Love Boat. Thoughts of whiling away the days on the high seas with hunky waiters swirling cocktails, and where on board you eat, drink, play, eat, maybe disembark, eat, drink and play some more. Okay, doesn’t sound too bad.

Still, I think I prefer my adventures on land.

I do love being on the water though . Canoeing, kayaking, enjoying that slow pace that allows us to feel at one with the frogs.  Tranquil, reflective times that still the mind.

Still, sometimes we want to ramp up the pace.

Have you ever felt like you just want to board a train and steam off into the night?

Now to me this is a fun way to travel. There’s something romantic about riding the rails, watching the countryside pass whilst relaxing, cocooned inside a railway carriage.

Call me loopy, but when we were on board the steam train in Maldon recently I felt like I was in a Harry Potter movie on board the Hogwarts Express.

Then there’s the joy of pedal power.

The breeze, the rush, the fun of seeing sights up close and personal.  I have fond memories of exhilarating bike rides in Austria and pedaling alongside canals in Amsterdam when I traveled to Europe many years ago.

As a child I used to be dinked on mum’s bicycle before they got their car. She’d pack her groceries in the front basket and me on the back seat!

Then there’s the good old fashioned horse and wagon.  Now I’m not that old but I can vouch that this mode of transport is like stepping back in time to the gypsy age.

This clip clop adventure that I wrote about here still rates as one of our quirkiest camping trips, a very slow paced and leisurely journey.

Or you can skip the wagon and saddle up for a view and a ride of a lifetime.

For us these days we’re traveling a bit easier in our trusty car and camper.

But at the end of the day the best mode of transport is right in front of us. These two feet of mine have walked to some amazing places.

Enjoy the ride and don’t forget to slow down, smell the roses (and the coffee) and take in the views along the way.

Remember it doesn’t matter how we reach our destination. The important thing is to enjoy every minute of the journey, always moving forward, loving life, with no regrets.

Maybe, just maybe, the journey IS the destination.

  8. The foot journeys are fun, just like the trains. But if we could Travel like Harry Potter, I’d like the broom. I know a bit of a cliche, but a flying broom would be amazing.

  12. Oh how wonderful,appreciating dufferents of travel. In places like india you have camels , donkeys , bulk carts etc..

    But you say it beautifully ..the journey is made beautiful because of who we share it with.

  18. I couldn’t agree more about the journey. Too often, when I reach my destination, I find myself disappointed and realize that it was the journey all along that was where I was finding myself. I’m not one for cruises either – the idea of sitting still on a boat makes me feel trapped – but I love planes, trains, and autos! I would love to take a long train trip one day in a sleeper car. And of course, my own two feet. Thanks for this great post. It was a happy way to start my day.

  21. So true, Miriam! Getting there is half the fun when we choose our transportation carefully…the slower way is the better way, because there is so much more to see and enjoy. And I have to admit that I had a wonderful time riding the trains in Ireland! I saw so much more of the countryside than I would have otherwise. Have a terrific day!

  22. It’s like hiking. Those that power to the top might miss all the cheery flowers hiding in the brush along the way. And, yes, that means I am the one bringing up the rear because I HAVE to stop to get that one final shot. 🙂 Lovely photos. ❤

  23. The journey is the destination – that’s a philosophy you often hear in the martial arts 😀 As for me, I prefer walking whenever I can, don’t love flying, but I have done a couple of cruises and they were, surprisingly, awesome!

  26. Seeing that train … in my first marriage, we lived near the rails, and every day I’d see the trains go by. Okay, hear them because they were so loud you couldn’t hear yourself think, lol. But it brought a strange comfort. It let me know the world was still going ‘round. And, I always wondered what would happen if I just ran out my backyard and hopped on one of the cars.

    I love your pictures! I can’t think of anyone I know who has traveled in more ways than you have!

  32. Fun post, and I’d always choose paddling or hiking! Never been on a long train journey, and that could be fun. Horses sense I can’t ride very well, and seem to choose the low hanging branch route when I’m aboard…

  34. Recently travelled overland through the Silk Rd – so much better than the flying option! Loved the long drive days through amazing scenery, something so different

  37. I totally agree that getting there is half the fun, I think it’s the excitement. We have cruised before but we only do this if we want a “sit on your arse” type of holiday. Usually we are fly and then roadtrip types so we can explore anything that takes our fancy. Recently did a train trip through the red rock canyons in Arizona – breathtaking and mind blowing. Gives me a new subject for my blog, thanks. Love sharing my travel locations to help inspire others
