Numbers in Motion

On the road and in life we can’t escape them.  Numbers between cities and the coast, numbers in signs and maps, highway route numbers.  Numbers are everywhere.

We’ve covered plenty of kilometres up the east coast of Australia and chalked up high numbers, both in distance traveled and in money and petrol spent to get there.

Cairns kms (800x600)

These numbers show the vastness and distance between places in Australia.

Walking trail (800x600)

Along the way and on foot we’ve covered a few kilometres too.  There are always signs telling us, before we start, how far we’re going and how long it will take.

Wineries sign (800x600)

And then there are the indulgent detours.

We love our wine and visiting the occasional winery.  Fortunately Australia is blessed with an abundance of wine regions, both close to home and further afield.

Pyrenees wine (800x600)

It’s always good to know how far until the next vineyard.

Just don’t ask me to do any heavy duty maths problems after I’ve had a few!

This was taken last weekend driving home from Frankston in the rain.   Signs are everywhere telling us how many minutes to go.  What’s the preoccupation with time?

Even in the car we know roughly how long it’s going to take.  But does it really matter?

Plane (800x600)

Maybe it does, if we’re catching a plane, and we want to make it to the airport on time!

Tash and Merl competing (800x600)

But in most cases, do the numbers really matter?  All our worries about making good time.  In the grand scheme of things will it make a difference?

Last year I turned 50 but in my head I still feel 21, well some days anyway.

Hey, it’s just a number after all!

On our kitchen wall at home is a clock painted by my daughter when she was five years old at kindergarten.  13 years later it’s still there, purposefully.

Some of the numbers are written as only a toddler can write,  scrawly and, from a distance, almost illegible.  I love it.  It reminds me that the numbers on a clock are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.  And that we should just enjoy every minute.

Let’s not get too hung up on numbers.

Instead let’s just remember to savor the moments.  That’s what counts.

Wishing you all a happy and safe week ahead as you continue the journey.

  1. Great entry Miriam! I am a huge wine lover so smiled when I saw the numbers for the vineyards. As for turning 50 and feeling 21, I am 44 but feel 21 too. My dad always gives his age by saying I’m “63 plus 10” for 73. I like that concept! 😊

  2. How great. Love the minions, and the winery post. “Are we there yet?” “How much longer” ring in my head from the road trips with my kids. Those numbers were important.

  3. What a precious clock! Numbers do seem to preoccupy much of our life, don’t they? I always have dates running around in my head and I look at the clock constantly checking the time.

  4. This post comes at exactly the right time for me. I’ve been hating numbers lately… how long I’ve been out of work… how many hours wasted since I’ve been home… my birthday coming up this Saturday… and more. Not so happy about the birthday number… but like you, I still feel younger… maybe about 25… most of the time. 🙂

The clock is adorable… priceless. And unless I need to be someone “on time” I really don’t care how long it takes. In fact, since today is my one-day-a-week without the kids for the whole day, I’m going for a walk right now (or jog? working on that…)… even though it’s about 85 degrees F. (I looked it up — that’s 29C.) And after the walk… and a shower… I’m going to drive to nowhere. My favorite kind of drive. I suppose I’ll have to come back, though. 😀

    1. That sounds so good, although by the time you read this you’ve probably already been and gone for your walk/jog and drive. If I was there I’d come with you …. for the drive that is, not the jog! xo 🙂

I love the way the Universe works…I know you mentioned you turned 50 last…Happy Belated 50th….was your birthday around this time..if so Happy 51st Birthday!!! Great post and I do agree that it is most important to know the distance between vineyards!! HA 🙂

        2. No, I meant my birthday was on the 25th! A Christmas gift, if you know what I mean. And yes, we’re both Librans, amazing. I’m a typical one, just as you described … 🙂

        3. Oh hee hee…I thought maybe because it’s winter there now, that you celebrated Christmas in winter…hence September! HA!!
I just left a comment on Hayley’s blog and mentioned you and gave her your link too…so perhaps if she gives private lessons or teaches publicly somewhere you two might hook up! She’s a truly beautiful person!! 🙂

  6. That was awesome – those Minions, rofl!

You are so right – we have only this moment, so I guess in the end, the only number that matters is one, because the past is gone and the future is always over there and not guaranteed.

    ❤ *hugs

  7. I loved these photos, Miriam – took me back to life in Australia. Did you know you can tour the wineries on horseback on the Mornington Peninsula? It’s quite a nice way to enjoy the scenery and the excellent wine 🙂
And I love your daughter’s clock – we have a plate quite similar from my daughter’s kinder class – they are so special, aren’t they?

  8. I don’t care much about numbers either. Especially when it come to age. Some of my friends bawled their hearts out when they turned 27/28. Never mind when they turned 30. Life is going to go on, no matter how old you are until one day it decides to stop. Instead of worrying about things that one can’t change, might as well enjoy life.

    P.S. I love the clock! 🙂 It’s so cute 🙂

  9. It’s true there’s no avoiding numbers In life, but I like to look at them as a countdown to something good instead of how much longer, how much further etc.

  10. I love this post – it really made me smile 🙂 and what a gorgeous clock created by your daughter! Thank you for reminded us all that numbers are just numbers – and don’t determine how young/old we are! Your face and smile are so very youthful and you look great – you are a living testament to prove that numbers are totally irrelevant in the grand scheme of things! 😉 xx

  11. I think it is very easy to “get caught up in the numbers” rather than simply enjoy life. Of course sometimes the numbers matter, a lot, but maybe a compromise between the two extremes is the answer? Although, like you, I do find it handy to know just exactly how far I am from the nearest winery….

      1. I did not even realized, it was your post 🙂
Our path does come cross each other a lot, even though we so far a part, I have beed getting offers from Australia, maybe we should do something together 🙂

  12. You your minion images made me laugh. Love your post and what you are saying about numbers! So very true. And can you believe that we’ve really never been to a winery yet??? And I love my glass of wine!

      1. Wooohooooo… I really need to finally do it. There’s a horseback wine tasting tour in the Mornington area. That’s what I really would like to do… and all the others too 😉 I’ll let you know when I head your way 😉

  13. I completely agree with you: age is nothing but a number, just like a tax demand. Incidentally, I initially read that you were driving home from Frankenstein. In a way, I’m sorry I was wrong. It sounds like an intriguing place to visit. 🙂

  14. I love this post 🙂 Yes sometimes we do get carried away with numbers. And its good to keep a rain check on that 🙂 But regarding age how much ever we try to contradict its true isn’t it? As age increases so many factors weigh us down. Pressure to start a family, financial responsibilities, health..All that is linked to our age :\

P.S.- In a few years I will be hitting 30, so this rant may have something to do with that 😉

    1. You’re still so young Minaxi but I know what you mean. Pressures are put on us from all around when we reach a certain age. But I think in the end, you have to be true to yourself and do what’s right in your life and not conform to please others. xo

      1. Oh yes. I can totally understand that. I am so young compared to you and even at this age, I am so attached to so many things at my home too..Which makes relocation so difficult :\ I end up buying bubble-wrap in tons to make sure that these survive our jumping from one place to another 😀
