Weekly Photo Challenge: Half Light – in Australia

We’ve been on a lot of trips and enjoyed many spectacular sunrises and sunsets, many of them over lakes, oceans and mountains.  But you don’t need to travel too far to appreciate  the dawn of a new day.  Sometimes the best starts to the day are found right at home, like this photo I took recently in the early morning half light..

The poem below pays tribute to the sun rise and sunsets of my beautiful country and is in response to the Daily Post Weekly Challenge.  The challenge was to share a photo inspired by a poem, verse, song lyric or story.

The Australian Sunrise

The Morning Star paled slowly, the Cross hung low to the sea
And down the shadowy reaches the tide came swirling free.
The lustrous purple blackness of the soft Australian night
Waned in the grey awakening that heralded the light;
Still in the dying darkness, still in the forest dim
The pearly dew of the dawning clung to each giant limb,
Till the sun came up from ocean, red with the cold sea mist,
And smote on the limestone ridges, and the shining tree-tops kissed;

Then the fiery Scorpion vanished, the magpie’s note was heard,
And the wind in the sheoak wavered and the honeysuckles stirred;
The airy golden vapour rose from the river breast,
The kingfisher came darting out of his crannied nest,
And the bulrushes and reed-beds put off their sallow grey
And burnt with cloudy crimson at the dawning of the day.

I love being outside in the early morning when the light streams through and at dusk  when the light goes down.   Even when it’s been a challenging day I know that new beginnings are around the corner.  That the sun always rises and it always sets.

Life isn’t just about darkness or light, rather it’s about finding light within the darkness.     Landon Parham

As a new day dawns and the half light shines  I remind myself that there’s always hope, in every moment and in every tomorrow.

I wish you all happiness, peace and hope in the half light of a new day.

  2. Lovely post and gorgeous photos, Miriam! There is something about an Australian sky – I remember my favourite time of day when we lived down South was dusk, the light gleaming across the water. There is something very special about the turning of the day, whether dawn or dusk, and you’ve captured it so well here.

  14. That was a great poem, and the pictures you chose to go with it really capture it’s essence. 🙂

    I have always wanted to see the Southern Cross – I caught the line about that in the poem.
