The Dance of Life

I’ve always loved dancing.  As a child I danced around the house, as a teenager I spent countless nights dancing into the early morning hours in clubs and discos and now as an adult, although the disco days are few and far between, I still feel the beat.

But this week’s Photo Challenge on Dance had me thinking a little deeper.  In a way we’re all dancing through life, every one of us.  Dancing around it, pushing through it …

Sometimes it can feel like we’re just following the crowd and we’re not getting too far.  Still finding our way.  Like a gradual process where we haven’t quite found our groove.

Lets Dance 2

Sometimes the dance moves are slow and hesitant and we have to learn to trust our partner and ourselves.  The dance starts awkward but then turns into something graceful, much like my daughter and her horse Merlin.  It was all about finding the groove, learning to trust but once they had the rhythm they were inseparable.  A perfect match.

And then there’s dancing with our partners.  Through life.  Sometimes, just like dance moves, circumstances and steps take us apart from each other, the moves become difficult but eventually we reach out and find our way back together again.

And the dance resumes.

Dance night

We don’t go dancing nearly as often as we used to but that’s okay. And when we do there’s nothing I love more than letting my hair down, feeling the beat of the music, releasing  inhibitions and feeling the stresses of life ebb away.

Maybe that’s why I love Zumba so much.  Feeling the music and connecting to the beat.  Losing myself in the music and the moves is almost like a meditation, a high octane one.

It’s the ultimate dance work out which always leaves me energised and happy.

And the beauty is, there’s no right or wrong way.

When you dance to your own rhythm, life taps its toes to your beat. — Terri Guillemets

So, go and find your own rhythm, and enjoy.  Surrender to the music and dance like there’s no one watching …

I wish you all happy times and dance moves on the journey that is life.

  1. We share the same interest in dancing. I also used to dance a lot when I was in grade school and high school. I also love Zumba but I rarely find time since I am now a full time mother of four adorable kids. My gosh, Miriam, you are a handful! How are you able to keep up? Please tell me…thank you in advance.

  2. Dancing to Zumba on the TV in the lounge keeps me and the little one happy. He tries to follow the moves as much as he can. It’s quite cute and funny at the same time. I love that you can express yourself in different ways, especially through dance. It’s so interesting how we find ways to do things that we love through the years. You are an inspiration ❤

      1. Unfortunately there is no community center or gym in our area so a TV is our only hope 😦 He’s been dancing as soon as he could walk, but my dancing skills are the equivalent of a druncle at a wedding with an open bar. Hehe.

  3. Yes, life is definitely a dance. Love to watch ballet, and in the past even won a prize with a India ink rendition of two dancers.

  4. I cannot dance even a little bit. As a result, I’ve never done zumba or any other kind of dance cardio. I’d rather do HIIT or go on the elliptical, lol.

It’s funny though, I often say, “the dance of our marriage,” which is a nice connection to your metaphor of dance as life 🙂

  5. Miriam, thank you so much for your uplifting and inspirational words of encouragement and hope today. I really needed them. I’m being pushed out onto the dance floor, so to speak, and the song that is playing is a dance that I hurt myself at some years ago. Your analogy is actually really helpful. I think I need to try to find a new way of moving with the music instead of fighting against it or stepping along to someone else’s beat.

  6. Great photos but that first one just made me chuckle a little as i could hear the lead cow saying: alright, everyone follow me, and we’ll see that this creature is 🙂

  7. Thank you for this! I used to love dancing – danced all over the house as a kid. I miss that – I miss that about me, and I need to find it again.

Zumba sounds awesome! I’m glad you found something that works for you. 🙂

  8. What a lovely comment, thanks Vanessa. Yes zumba is wonderful and I’m glad I found it, it’s a great outlet for stress and just a general feel good thing. I hope you find your own dance ‘thing’ as well. Take care. xo
