Urban Art in Nar Nar Goon

Less than an hour from Melbourne is a tiny country township that has some of the best murals I’ve seen in Australia.  Although it has a population of less than 1000 people  in its hey day it would have been a bustling place.

We discovered it by accident one weekend when we detoured through the town.  Let me take you on a tour through Nar Nar Goon which, incidentally, is the Aboriginal word for koala.  A perfect way to share its vivid murals in Paula’s Thursday Special: Urban Art.

Nar Nar Goon is a typical Australian country town with its pub, small shops, CFA, railway station and community halls.  This is the main street, a bustling metropolis it’s not!

The corner op-shop depicts times of old.  This was no doubt once the busy town centre.

The railway was a crucial part of the early town.

The good old General Store, every country township had one of these.

And here’s some art of the real heroes, local CFA members fighting an extensive bushfire, all too common in Australia, complete with red engine and firefighters directing hoses.

Of course Hubby couldn’t resist being silly and poking some fun at the local post master.

And here’s the Butchers.  Someone in town has a wicked sense of humor.

I love traveling, discovering new places and finding hidden gems along the way.  Nar Nar Goon was one of them.  I hope as you go through life you see beyond the surface and discover many hidden treasures of your own.

  9. Oh, I love these. They’re great and provide lots of atmosphere to the town. That could have been my husband there in that photograph – yep, the inner child still well and truly alive! 😀 Thank you for sharing these.

      1. The best thing I’ve seen in a small town is this huge metal coffee pot suspended in the air. It is found in a small town called koffiefontein (directly translated as coffee fountain) in the Free State. It is where Mr was born. It’s actually a fountain and water flows from the spout. We always see little kids splashing in the water.

        7. When we were in Silverton a few years ago there was a donkey roaming the town. He came up to our car and nearly put his head in the window! He was so friendly.
