Today, on a stinking hot 39C summer day in Melbourne, our air conditioner and ceiling fan broke down. Both of them. Is the universe trying to tell me something? Like maybe we’re so busy keeping everything afloat in our world that we’ve forgotten the fundamentals.
I had a bit of a melt down tonight. I admit it. Call me silly if you want but lately it feels like everything around me is falling to pieces. I can’t help thinking back to my last post on Maintenance Matters and feeling like I’ve missed something.
I remember my walk this morning. It was early and as Harry and I walked, we heard the squawking of what seemed like a hundred cockatoos. They were raucous. And flying everywhere. Busy, busy, even the birds seemed busy.
But then I looked up and there were two white crested cockatoos above me. They looked like they were kissing. Sitting together side by side nuzzling and looking as though they didn’t have a care in the world.
Back at home later two landed. On our decking. As though they were telling me something. Like, chill out baby, just stick together and don’t worry so much.
So that’s what I’m trying to do. Take a leaf out of the cockatoos and worry less. Just go with the breeze. Ride the wind and not let mundane stresses get to me.
To help I found some words of bird wisdom:
“The reason birds can fly and we can’t is simply because they have perfect faith, for to have faith is to have wings.” ― J.M. Barrie, The Little White Bird
Worries and Tensions are like birds.
We can’t stop them from flying near us,
But we can stop them from making nest on our head!
A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on it’s wings. Always believe in yourself….
Mind you, I still have to get that air conditioner fixed.
Wishing everyone a worry free day, and if stresses come may they fly over your head and not land.
I love how you find inspiration in the little things happening around you. Thanks for the smile.

Anytime, Miriam! I’ve lost AC in the heat of summer. It can make even the coolest of us hot under the collar! ❤️

Well said. How cool to have cockatoos just flying about like that!
Our internet is out this morning. So I’m working off my phone. That’s usually a recipe for a spelling mishap. I will just have to trust my wings.

Haha. Your wings worked just fine Wendy. Hope you got your Internet back on.

I like that you have Cockatoos just flying around. Here in the US you can only find them as pets. Beautiful birds. I hope you get your AC working soon. Or at least your fan! What are the chances they broke at the same time??? That’s terrible!

Yep, today I’ll ring around to organise someone to fix at least the air con. Kind of reminds me a bit of your post about lemons and lemonade. When somthing’s gonna go wrong …

what a wonderful image, I will do that from now onwards: when I see the stresses coming I imagine them flying over my head (and still get the necessary fixed 😉 )

I love that you used the birds to teach about dealing with worries!
To be honest, I am over the Summer heat and am longing for the cooler Autumn months.
Good luck on the repairs and “trust in your wings.”

I like the quote about believing in yourself. I have an ocean swim on this weekend and I have psyched myself out. Just need to keep telling myself that I can do this. Hope things get better for you and knowing Melbourne it is probably cool and raining today!

Nope, still hot and muggy. All the best with your ocean swim this weekend, Ann. You CAN do it!

Same thing happening to me right now with truck problems, Vinny problems and daily stress of crazy drivers. Prioritize, focus on one problem at a time then move on. Simple, right? NOT!

Awww my sweet Miriam, there are days and times that it seems like all that can go wrong will. Good for you for seeing the signs that were given. Don’t forget that it doesn’t take going camping to slow down, meditate and enjoy the little things! I hope you find a chance to slow down this weekend and recharge your batteries and energy for the week. And I hope the fan and AC situation is fixed 😉

You are so sweet Niki and you’re quite right. I can find peace and relaxation even at home in the simple things, not just when I’m out camping. Just makes it hard when everything around me feels like it needs repair but, hey, we’ll get there!

Watch the birds more and let the repairs keep you busy and happy to have a home to repair but without overwhelming yourself 🙂 With music and family sometimes those pesky projects can be fun and create wonderful memories :*

That’s good to hear, and you are not alone. There are some instances when I react too quickly but it’s more to do with instinct than anything else. Since moving back home and giving up the hustle and bustle of life in a larger town, I have learned to think more and react less. I think it’s all the quiet I am surrounded with 🙂

That’s a good thing, the quiet, and learning to think more and react less. It’s something I need to do more of, lately I’ve been a bit off centre.

It is and I think the off-centeredness (I think this is not a word) is cyclical, a part of the natural ebb and flow of our lives. We are complex creatures and when you add other complex creatures into the mix (family, friends, work-mates), and the odd unexpected event, it can be hard to relax. From what I am reading in your posts, however, I believe you have certainly embraced the simpler things and that will go a long way in allowing you to reach that goal 🙂

Yes, life is definitely more complex these days but I think you’re right, embracing the simple things helps. It doesn’t always fix problems but it does help put things in perspective.

You have cool birds around. When things get hectic in my life, I like to sit outside with a cup of tea or a glass of vino and watch the birds. That’s how I take my deep breath…. We don’t have these exotic birds like you’ve got but I love the ones that show up and all their antics.
