Be warned, these photos are not the typical images of dazzling waters, azure coral reefs and tropical blue skies. These are from my photo album, hastily scanned when I noticed a prompt on Just Fooling around with Bee’s Countries we love They date back to December 1992 when hubbs and I were newly married lovebirds on our honeymoon in the Maldives.
We fell in love with this island paradise, truly one of the most beautiful islands on earth. Not only did we walk on pristine sand, island hop to remote islands and lagoons and snorkel in crystal clear waters but we met beautiful islanders, glimpsed a gentle culture, enjoyed banquets of exotic delights and all with not a phone in sight.
They might not be the best quality photos but the nine days we spent in the Maldives were blissfully carefree. As a honeymoon should be. Lazing on the beach, swimming, snorkeling, enjoying beach dinners in bare feet and spectacular sunsets.
Cliched, yeah probably. Romantic, definitely.
This country of 1,200 low lying islands in the Indian Ocean are vulnerable to extreme storms and tsunamis so I hope they’ll still be there when I’m no longer.
And the memories remain. Twenty three years later we still have an enlarged sunset photo of us hanging on a wall. I don’t think hubbs could pick me up quite so easily these days. It’d do his back in! And although our honeymoon days are long over this picture is a nice reminder of not just where we’ve been but how far we’ve come together.
Life is far from idyllic these days. But that’s to be expected with routine every day stuff that comes with raising two teenagers, a menagerie of animals and the usual stresses of life and earning a living. But we find our joys in the ordinary. I think we’re doing okay.
Wishing everyone a taste of an idyllic life, much love and an ocean full of happiness.
May we all continue to enjoy the journey.
What wonderful, happy memories! Thanks for sharing that, Miriam. Put a smile on my face 😀

Cool pics and good to see a destination in the past. More character from scanned pics I reckon! My folks had their 25th wedding anniversary there and loved it!

Lucky them. I’d love to go back but I don’t think we could afford it now. Have to make do with the memories! 🙂

Hi Miriam. This makes me want a 2nd honeymoon! I’ve never even heard of this place. Sounds unbelievably charming.
Pretty cool that you have that picture hanging up. I think I’ll dig my honeymoon pictures out and hang them up!
Congrats on 23 years! PS pretty sure my husband would have trouble picking me up now, too. We’ll be together 21 years this June! 🙂

Lovely memories Miriam! I’ve scanned some of my photos too as I traveled a lot before the age of digital cameras. I would love to go to the Maldives! What a perfect place for a honeymoon. Love then framed photo on your wall. We did the Greek Isles for our honeymoon in 2000. So much has changed in the last 16 years!

Wow, the Greek Isles sounds amazing too Nicole. Aah, to go back and revisit though I’m sure it would be quite different. Sometimes it’s better just to have the memories and explore new places.

Yes that is how I feel because I wouldn’t want to be disappointed if it changed to much or I didn’t have as wonderful of a time as I did before.

I wrote an e-book on the Maldives after living there last year, ‘The Maldives On Any Budget.’ Maybe this could help the anchor situation!

Beautiful! Always wanted to go to the Maladives with my husband, but honeymoon is long over (spent in German Berlin because we had to brrrrrr). We promised each other another one in a year or two, so let’s see. Valuable memories, Miriam, thank you for sharing!

This is a beautiful post Miriam. I loved reading about your most special holiday. Your pictures are so precious. I found myself relating to some them, like the little wooden bridges that still remain in some places. And love that you still have a photo on your wall. Even tho I lived in the Maldives for 7 months last year there is still so much to explore. Loved this post!!
