One of the most peaceful places we’ve camped at this year was Hattah Lakes. This was an overnight stop, our last coming back from our epic road trip to the Flinders Ranges and Arkaroola. But who says you have to stay somewhere a long time to have a good time?
When we visited Hattah Lakes there was not another camper in sight. We had the entire place to ourselves. Now that’s camping!
There’s not much night life around here – except for the ducks and birds!
In fact the main activity – aside from sitting lakeside with a glass of red wine in hand – is walking. Here’s our two kids getting a bit of exercise.
The reflections off the waters of the lake were mesmorising.
Early morning was the best time to enjoy this peaceful landscape. The next morning I left the others sleeping to head out by myself.
With the sounds of bird life waking up and the sun peaking through pink and orange clouds it was a magical way to start the day.
It was just me out there. Oh, and the occasional kangaroo that I met along the way, like this big fella. I’m always careful not to get too close.
Hattah Lakes is found off the Murray Valley Highway 4 km east of Hattah, and 70 km south of Mildura in Victoria. There are plenty of nature drives to explore in the National Park but we were content to simply relax after our long drive back from the Flinders.
We stayed only one night but the tranquility, the campfire and star gazing and my early morning walk made me feel like I’d been there much longer. I was rested. And the next morning we were homeward bound.
Looking back now, I think I could have handled another night there!
Beautiful.
